P.A.I (Poly Amide Imide) Torlon®

Essentially a polycondensate of imide chains with aromatic diamines, this unique material orginally from Amoco Performance Products is manufactured by phosgenation of trimellitic anhydride and reaction of the acid chloride, with 4,4'-diaminophenyl methane in N-methyl pyrrolidone at room temperature.

Available in primarily rod and sheet Torlon® is available in the following grades:

4203L 3% TiO2 + 0.5% PTFE High notched impact strength, high elongation good electrical properties Electrical insulator
4301 12% Graphite + 3% PTFE High compressive strength low coefficient of friction high wear resistance bearings, seal rings
4275 20% Graphite + 3% PTFE Similar to 4301 but higher wear resistance 4301+ higher performance
5030 30% GF + 1% PTFE High stiffness at elevated temperatures, high strength and dimensional stability valve plates, pistons, metal Replacement part
6000 30% mineral + 1% PTFE Good mechanical properties at high temperature, good electrical properties. Electrical & Mechanical components
7130 30% C-Fibre + 1% PTFE similar to 5030 but stiffer at high temperature, high fatigue strength. load bearing parts of high strength, Thermal insulation

Torlon® Polyamideimides can be characterised by the following properties:

  • High strength between -190°C and 260°C
  • High impact strength
  • High dimensional stability
  • High fatigue limit
  • High heat distortion temperature
  • Low coefficient of linear thermal expansion
  • Very good dielectric properties
  • High chemical resistance
  • Flame retardant (UL 94 V-0)
  • Resistant to oxidation
  • Resistant to high energy radiation

  • Low outgassing at high vacuum
